Education
The local education system falls under the umbrella of the Mesa County Valley School System. The main high school for Redlands residents is Fruita Monument. The primary middle schools are Redlands Middle and Orchard Mesa Middle. Elementary schools include Mesa View, Lincoln, Scenic, Dos Rios and Wingate. Overall, the local school system is outstanding, featuring low student to teacher ratios and a challenging curriculum. The city of Redlands is part of the District 51 school district, which has a better than 50-year history of excellence. Total student population for the entire district is just over 21,000 which compares favorably to the total number of teachers which is approximately 1,600. For those students and working adults pursuing higher education, Mesa State College is located five miles from Redlands in downtown Grand Junction.
Economy and Job Market
Redlands has a thriving economy further bolstered by its proximity to Grand Junction. A variety of employment opportunities exist in many dynamic industries such as scientific and technical services, healthcare, finance, public administration and hospitality. Construction is also a popular field as many new residential, retail and office space projects are continually being developed throughout Redlands and surrounding areas. There are three major medical facilities within a 12-mile radius of Redlands in addition to many private practices. Community Hospital and Saint Mary’s Hospital & Medical Center are located in Grand Junction while Family Health West Hospital is located about eight miles away in the city of Fruita. Mesa State College is the largest academic institution in the area with a current enrollment of over 4,400. Similar to Grand Junction, Redlands has many restaurants, hotels and retail shops with a selection of employment opportunities. Additionally, many corporations such as the Pepsi Bottling Group have satellite offices in the area with opportunities in management, sales, administrative services, accounting and other financial positions.
Attractions and Points of Interest
There is so much to do and see around Redlands. Cultural venues include the Western Colorado Center for the Arts, Avalon Theatre, Museum of the West, and The Museum of Western Colorado. In downtown Grand Junction, streets are lined with art galleries, specialty shops, boutiques, antique stores and restaurants with sidewalk dining. There are also more than 100 artistic sculptures located on sidewalks throughout the area, which makes window shopping a truly unique experience. The Colorado River is a great place to camp along the shores, hike or rock climb, fish or river raft down roaring rapids. For wine lovers, the Grand Valley region has several family-owned vineyards and wineries to enjoy. Guided tours are available, but day trips are equally fun with friends and family as you explore the region on your own. Golf courses also abound with several challenging layouts. There are also two nine-hole courses for those new to the game or looking to squeeze in a few holes as part of their day. The largest and most popular attraction in the area remains the Colorado National Monument, a United States National Park. The monument is an outdoorsmen’s paradise with steep canyons, red sandstone rock formations, large plateaus and sweeping valleys filled with wildlife.
Parks and Recreations
Paradise is not hard to find in Redlands. From the city’s public parks to nearby state parks and monuments, there is so much to explore and do in Redlands. Camping is a popular retreat for many locals while biking and hiking enthusiasts use the area’s many trails to navigate their way through stunning rock outcroppings. Due to the rock formations, mountain climbing is also very popular as is fishing and rafting in the local rivers and bodies of water. Downtown Grand Junction is just over five miles away where thousands of locals gather to shop, dine, and enjoy the city’s many cultural attractions. During summer months a variety of special events are held for people of all ages to enjoy. The more notable events include the Downtown Art and Jazz Festival, Palisade Peach Festival and the Summer Concert Series at Grande River Vineyards. Locally, Redlands parks feature soccer fields and baseball diamonds, tennis and basketball courts, and safe play areas for small children. The Redlands park and play areas are located near residential neighborhoods and schools.
